WACO, Texas - Houston Men's Golf great Billy Ray Brown will be inducted into the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame announced Wednesday.
Brown joins Norm DeBriyn (Arkansas), Thomas Everett (Baylor), Ricky Pierce (Rice), Kyle (O'Brien) Stephens (SMU), Carlette (Guidry) White (Texas), Anjanette Kirkland (Texas A&M), Darrell Browder (TCU) and Tracy Smith (Texas Tech) as the 2015 induction class. Sponsored by the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame induction ceremony and luncheon will be held at the Doubletree by Hilton in downtown Dallas on Monday, October 5 at 11:30 a.m.
"These players and coaches exemplify what made the Southwest Conference so great: They were tough, hard-working and represented their schools with pride," said Jared Mosley, the President/CEO of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. "The Southwest Conference Hall of Fame exists because sports in the southwest is legendary, and it's legendary because of athletes like these."
Brown was a four-year letterwinner for the Houston Cougar men's golf team from 1982-85. He was a member of three NCAA Team Championship squads while at Houston (1982, 1984 and 1985) and was the 1982 Individual NCAA Champion after shooting 280 over four rounds at the Pinehurst Country Club in Pinehurst, N.C. At the time, Brown was just the third freshman to claim an NCAA Individual Championship.
Brown was named an All-American four times with the Cougars, earning First Team honors in 1982 and 1985 and Third Team honors in 1983 and 1984. He finished his collegiate career with five tournament victories, which is tied for fourth in program history, and he was a 2004 inductee into the Houston Athletics Hall of Honor.
