Swimming & Diving Finishes Third at Big 12 Conference Championships

Cougars finish with 1,211.5 points while winning an event championship
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The University of Houston Swimming & Diving capped a third place showing as the Big 12 Conference Championships came to a close on Saturday at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.Â

The Cougars finished with 1,211.5 points, sitting behind champion #14 Arizona State (1,695) and Arizona (1,240). Trailing Houston were TCU (854), Utah (809.5), Cincinnati (800.5), BYU (761.5), Kansas (542), West Virginia (409) and Iowa State (397).Â

Sophomore Michelle McLeod and junior Virag Peter led the way for the Cougars on the final day of the meet. McLeod placed second in the platform diving competition, garnering 247.60 points. Fifth-year Emilia Waters took 11th (240.20) with freshman Caroline Roelen finishing 14th (205.25).Â

Meanwhile, Peter took second overall in the 200-yard breaststroke with a 2:09.91 while senior Henrietta Fangli and sophomore Evelyn Entrekin placed fourth and 24th, respectively, with times of 2:10.74 and 2:18.06. Included in Entrekin's mark was a 100-yard breaststroke split of 59.58, improving her hold of the third fastest time in program history. Fangli's mark improved her control of the fourth fastest time in program history.Â

In the 200-yard backstroke, sophomore Elizabeth Jimenez took fourth place after touching the wall in 1:55.39. Freshman Lottie Cullen won the B-Final with a 1:54.28 while fifth-year Danielle Titus took 11th with a 1:56.22, the sixth fastest time in program history and earning an NCAA B-Cut.Â

In the 200 back prelims, Jimenez swam a 1:55.33, the third fastest time in program history.

Sophomore Sydney Nethercutt placed fourth in the 1,650-yard freestyle which included a 1,000-yard split time of 9:59.62, the fourth fastest time for 1,000 yards in program history. Behind her, freshman Mariana Cote used a personal best time of 16:43.37 for 10thplace while freshman Kaeli White took 22nd with a 17:01.19 and freshman Elizabeth Benoit clinched 23rd with a personal-best time of 17:01.64.Â

Houston's 400-yard freestyle relay team of junior Liya Goupil, freshman Sienna Bruner, junior Jenna Kerkman and Jimenez placed seventh with a time of 3:20.93.

Closing out the day, Goupil paced the Cougars in the 100-yard freestyle. She finished with a time of 49.84 for 11th place. Kerkman earned 24th place with a time of 50.99. Both Goupil and Kerkman's preliminary heat times moved them up on Houston's all-time top 10 list. Goupil moved into fifth with a 49.81 while Kerkman entered the list at #10 with a 50.43.Â
