DALLAS - Sophomores Curtis Reed and Bryn Flanagan each posted final-round 71s Tuesday to help lead the University of Houston golf team to a tie for seventh place during the final round of the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate.
Reed and Flanagan finished with the Cougars' lowest individual rounds of the day. Reed, a 2010 Conference USA All-Tournament honoree, used a consistent performance throughout the day to tie for 30th with a score of 216. The Castroville, Texas, native posted two birdies, two bogeys and 14 pars in the final round.
Flanagan endured a roller-coaster opening nine which included two birdies, three bogeys and an eagle on the 563-yard, par-5 14th hole. With a score of 217, the Krugersdorp, South Africa, native tied for 40th.
As a team, the Cougars moved up one place in the final standings with a team score of 862. Junior James Ross, who set a Houston record with a 64 during Monday's second round, overcame a difficult start and tied for ninth with a score of 209.
"We meshed together and had a decent final round," head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "Conditions were much tougher out there today with more wind and some challenging hole locations."
Teeing off from hole No. 10, Ross started his round bogey-double bogey-bogey before draining a birdie on the par-5 14th hole. After another bogey on No. 15, Ross settled down and capped his opening nine with back-to-back birdies.
The Edinburgh, Scotland, native finished his final nine holes with six pars, a birdie and a pair of bogeys for his second top-10 finish of the fall season.
"James came back from a horrendous start to give us a round we needed," Dismuke said.
No. 29 Texas A&M won the team title for the third time in the four-year history of the program with a score of 830, one stroke ahead of No. 27 Duke. No. 33 Oklahoma (845), two-time defending NCAA national champion Augusta State (848), No. 14 New Mexico (852) and No. 28 and co-host Baylor (853) rounded out the top-six team leaders.
Individually, Lamar's M.J. Daffue grabbed medalist honors with a score of 202. Three players tied at 205.

This was the Cougars' fourth and final tournament of the fall season. Houston opens its 2012 spring season on Feb. 13-14 when it takes part at the UTSA Oak Hills Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
Dismuke and assistant coach Chris Hill will use the rest of this week to reflect on the fall season and make a plan of action for the team and each student-athlete.
The coaches also will sit down individually with each member of the team to prepare for off-season practices, which will focus heavily on areas of the game in which each student-athlete must improve.
