TEXARKANA, Ark. - Battling tough weather conditions throughout the day, the University of Houston golf team fell into a tie for fifth place following the second round of the Conference USA Championships at Texarkana Country Club.
The Cougars fired a team score of 297 and tied with UAB for fifth place with a 36-hole score of 585 on the 6,935-yard, par-72 course
The start of Monday's second round was delayed two hours due to rain in the area. The tournament resumed at 10 a.m., with a shotgun start.
When play continued, student-athletes and teams faced challenging conditions on the course. Although overcast skies dropped temperatures into the high 70s, student-athletes battled wind gusts up to 35 mph that elevated team and individual scoring for the day.
"It was very, very windy, and we had thunderstorms all around us," head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "We were fortunate to get this round in."
During Sunday's first round, nine of the 11 schools posted team scores of 293 or better. On Monday, only three teams finished with scores that low.
"We didn't play our best today, but we had a pretty decent finish and that kept us in touch with the leaders," Dismuke said. "We will regroup and try to put a low one up Tuesday."
Freshman Curtis Reed rebounded from a tough stretch midway through the second round to finish 1-over-par in his round. The Castroville, Texas, native birdied two of his final three holes and was tied for sixth with a two-day score of 143.
"Curtis should be in good shape for the tournament, and I am very proud of his play through the first two rounds," Dismuke said.
With birdies on his last two holes, freshman Wesley McClain finished his second round at even-par 72 - the Cougars' lowest round of the day - and was tied for 21st at 147.
"Wesley had an unbelievable finish," Dismuke said. "I was really proud of the way he ended his round."
Other Cougars in action were sophomore Will Dusenbury (t-34th, 150), freshman Bryn Flanagan (t-36th, 151) and freshman Jesse Droemer (t-43rd, 154).
With the best team round of the day at even-par 288, Tulsa moved atop the team leaderboard with a two-day total of 577, three strokes ahead of Memphis and five strokes better than No. 32 UCF.
East Carolina (584) stood in fourth place with Marshall (586), Southern Miss (588), No. 50 SMU (591), Rice (601) and UTEP (610) rounding out the rest of the field.
Memphis' Jonathan Fly and Tulsa's John Young Kim were tied for the individual lead at 4-under-par 140. UCF's Greg Eason and Kelly Kraft of SMUY were tied for third at 142, while Tulsa's Johannes Veerman stood in fifth at 142.
