TEXARKANA, Ark. - The University of Houston golf team used steady performances throughout their lineup during the final round to finish tied for fourth at the Conference USA Championships at Texarkana Country Club.
The Cougars fired a final-round team score of 286, tying for the third-lowest total of the day. With that, Houston ended the tournament with a score of 7-over-par 871.
With a lineup consisting of four freshmen and a sophomore competing in his first semester at Houston, the Cougars recorded the program's best finish at the C-USA Championships since placing fourth at the 203 event.
"We are starting to develop as a program and are committed to making this program great again," head coach Jonathan Dismuke said. "We have talented players who work hard and do all the right things."
Three Cougars finished the round under par with no student-athlete shooting higher than a 76 on the final day on the 6,935-yard, par-72 course.
"We had a meeting last night, and I knew the guys were going to come out and be committed. We were disheartened after Monday's round; we let a few shots slip away," Dismuke said. "We came back strong today and played a very solid round. I am very proud of the guys."
Freshman Curtis Reed posted a three-day total of 2-under-par 214 to lead the Cougars and finish fifth.
For the second time in the last three days, Reed posted a pair of eagles in his round, finishing with 3s on the par-5 seventh and 12th holes.
With that, the Castroville, Texas, native earned a place on the C-USA All-Tournament Team. Reed became only the second Cougar since 2004 to be named to the All-Tournament Team, joining Jordan Irwin in 2007.
"Curtis is a very solid player for us. He has really progressed over the course of the year and has improved tremendously," Dismuke said. "When he is hitting on all cylinders, he is a great competitor and is hard to beat."
Will Dusenbury - who as a sophomore was the elder statesman in the Cougar lineup - fired a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole on his second hole of the day and added three more birdies in his round. The League City, Texas, native finished in a tie for 23rd with a score of 220.
"Will has been a tremendous asset to our program after joining us at semester. He came in and filled a void that we had," Dismuke said. "His performance today was critical for us to move up the leaderboard."
Freshman Jesse Droemer overcame a slow start that included three straight bogeys, posting three birdies on his final eight holes for a final-round 71. The Sealy, Texas, native finished with a 54-hole total of 225 to finish 37th.
Freshman Wesley McClain tied for 26th with a score of 221, while freshman Bryn Flanagan posted a score of 227 to tie for 40th.
UCF captured the team championship with a score of 862 and earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regional. Memphis finished second at 864, while Tulsa placed third at 868.
UAB tied with the Cougars at 871, while No. 44 East Carolina (874), Marshall (878), No. 50 SMU (884), Southern Miss (884), Rice (898) and UTEP (909) rounded out the tournament.
Memphis' Jonathan Fly won medalist honors at 7-under-par 209, while UCF's Greg Eason finished second with a score of 210. East Carolina's David Watkins, Tulsa's John Young Kim and Johannes Veerman also joined Reed on the All-Tournament Team.
