PARK CITY, Utah â€" Thanks to its third straight team round of par or better, the University of Houston Men's Golf program rolled to a 13-stroke victory and the team championship at the OGIO Utah Invitational on Tuesday afternoon at The Jeremy Golf and Country Club.
Posting a score of even-par 284, the Cougars finished the two-day, 54-hole event with a total of 824, 13 strokes ahead of runner-up Utah State on the 7,075-yard, par-71 course. It was the program's fourth overall championship and second team title of the young season.
The Cougars won the HBU Husky Intercollegiate team crown on Sept. 22, while senior Vincent Martino (Northern Intercollegiate) and Michael Perras (HBU Husky Intercollegiate) captured the individual championships at their respective tournaments.
This marked the 11th team championship for Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke during his seven-year tenure at Houston.
Houston used a dominating performance in Monday's First and Second Rounds to build a commanding lead. The Cougars opened the tournament with a score of 273 and then posted a dazzling 17-under-par 267 in the Second Round to finish the first day at 28-under-par
Individually, four Cougars finished among the top-10 leaders. After posting a 73 in Tuesday's Final Round, junior Matt Scobie fell out of the lead but tied for fourth with a score of 8-under-par. A day after shooting back-to-backs 66s, the Ajax, Ontario, Canada, native finished with two birdies over his final 18 holes for his second straight top-10 finish.
Senior All-American Blair Hamilton stayed in sixth after shooting a 72 and finishing at 7-under-par 206. Hamilton, who competed in the U.S. Amateur Championship earlier this summer, finished with three birdies in his Final Round on the way to the eighth top-10 finish of his career.
Sophomore Michael Perras enjoyed the team's low round of the day with a 69 and tied for 10th at 3-under-par 210. The Deer Park, Texas native started his day on a high note with a birdie on No. 2 and sank back-to-back birdies on Nos. 7 and 8. He opened the back nine with consecutive bogeys but moved back to even-par for the day with an eagle on the 540-yard, par-5 13th hole and added his final birdie on No. 15.
Tying with Perras in 10th, Martino enjoyed his second straight sub-par round with a steady effort on the way to a 70. The Southlake, Texas, native made only two birdies but endured only one bogey in Tuesday's round for his second top-10 showing in three tournaments to date.
Junior Emmett Oh tied for 31st at 217. Redshirt freshman Logan Davis fired a Final-Round 69 and moved into a tie for 24th at 217, while junior Matt Dunn tied for 37th at 219.
Utah State's Seokwon earned medalist honors at 12-under-par 201, thanks for a Final-Round 65. Trent Hill of Utah's "B" team was runner-up at 203, while Tanner Jenson of Utah State finished third at 204. Scobie joined Weber State's Devon Purser in a tie for fourth.
Following the Cougars, Utah State (837), Weber State (847), Utah (849) and Little Rock (851) rounded out the top-5 team leaders.
