SUGAR GROVE, Ill. -- Completing an outstanding Second Round in the morning, University of Houston senior Vincent Martino carried that momentum into the Final Round to capture the individual championship at the Northern Intercollegiate on Sunday afternoon.
With the Second Round suspended on Saturday evening, Martino and his Cougar teammates returned to the course Sunday morning to their rounds. The Southlake, Texas, native drained eight birdies on the way to a career-low 66 in the Second Round and posted a 73 in the Final Round for a score of 3-under-par 213 to capture the first title of his career on the 7,151-yard, par-72 course.
Martino's Second-Round birdies came in bunches. Starting on No. 1, he sank a birdie on No. 2 before dropping back to even par with a bogey on No. 4. From there, he sank three birdies on his next five holes to close out his front nine.
After making par on No. 10 to open his back nine, Martino drained birdies on three of his next four holes and added his eighth and final birdie on No. 17 to cap the round.
His Second-Round scored bested his previous low of 67, set in the Third Round of the Rice Intercollegiate on Feb. 5, 2013. Martino, who prepped at Carroll High, also enjoyed a career-best finish, besting his second-place showing at the 2014 Northern Intercollegiate.
In the Final Round, Martino was consistent throughout. He played his front nine in even par with a birdie on No. 6 and moved to -1 in the afternoon session with a birdie on No. 14. Although back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 15 and 16 cut his lead to a stroke, he ended the tournament with consecutive pars to claim the championship.
Martino became the fifth different Cougar to win an individual title under seventh-year Director of Golf Jonathan Dismuke, joining Jackie Lindsey, Roman Robledo, Blair Hamilton and Kyle Pilgrim.
Illinois's Dylan Meyer finished second at 214 with teammates Thomas Detry and Charlie Danielson tying for third at 215. Combined with Martino, they were the only players to break par for the entire tournament.
As a team, the Cougars slipped to fourth with a 54-hole score of 893. Illinois won the team title at 857 to finish 27 strokes ahead of Purdue, who the Cougars defeated in a 1-hole team playoff at the 2014 NCAA Lubbock Regional to advance to the NCAA Championships for the second straight season. UCLA finished third at 886.
Following Houston, Virginia (896), Louisville (901), American Athletic Conference-rival UCF (906), Toledo (910), Winthrop (910), New Mexico State (917) and Marquette (917) rounded out the top-11 leaders.
Senior All-American Blair Hamilton tied for 15th at 222, while junior Matt Scobie tied for 34th at 228. Sophomore Alan De Bondt tied for 45th at 219 with junior Emmett Oh tying for 50th at 232 while competing as an individual. Junior Matt Dunn, making his Houston debut after transferring from Air Force, tied for 57th at 235.
NORTHERN INTERCOLLEGIATE HISTORY
This marked the third straight season in which the Cougars competed at the Northern Intercollegiate. A year ago, Houston finished fifth as Martino posted a score of 1-under-par 215 for a then-career-best second-place finish.
In 2013-14, the Cougars enjoyed a third-place team showing as eventual All-American Roman Robledo captured his first of four individual titles that season with a score of 5-under-par 211. Then-sophomore Blair Hamilton opened that tournament with a 67 and finished eighth at even-par 216.
UP NEXT
Following the Northern Intercollegiate, the Cougars return to action when they compete at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate presented by Graeme McDowell on Sept. 28-29 at Shoal Creek in Birmingham, Ala.
From there, the team heads west to take part at the Utah Invitational on Oct. 5-6 at The Jeremy Golf and Country Club in Salt Lake City, Utah.
